Five Georgia Summer Destinations to Visit this Summer

A rushing creek and waterfall near Wildcat Creek

When summer temperatures in Atlanta start climbing, it’s time to round up the family and head to one of the local swimming holes. Pack a picnic for a day-long outing or plan an extended trip at one of these beautiful summer destinations in the state of Georgia.

Farmer’s Lake

This “lake” is actually a concrete-lined pool fed by a natural spring. Located in the Red Clay Resort, this man-made swimming hole is fun for the whole family. Open daily with extended evening hours for private parties, the park includes a game room, onsite restrooms, a picnic area and a pavilion. You can bring your own floats and chairs or rent some from the resort. Rent a charcoal grill to cap off your visit with an old-fashioned cookout.

Holly Creek Preserve

This 250-acre preserve in the Atlanta area features miles of hiking trails leading through beautiful landscapes to  waterfalls and swimming areas. Several swimming spots can be found in the preserve, or you hike to Emery Creek to enjoy even more natural beauty. The trek can be difficult because of the multiple creek crossings involved, but those who follow the journey to the end say it’s more than worth the effort.

Sea Creek Falls

Part of the Cooper Creek Scenic Area, Sea Creek Falls is an amazing sight. Multiple waterfalls cascade over rocks filled with sparkling mineral deposits, becoming even more impressive after the spring thaw or a heavy rain. There are plenty of places to wade, cool off under the falls or simply stand and admire the natural beauty.

Sweetwater Creek Park

Whether you like fishing, hiking or swimming, Sweetwater Creek Park is a fun place to bring the family for a day. Just a short drive from Milton, this park plays host to picnic areas, trails and a large reservoir. If you’re feeling adventurous, try hiking down by the ruins of the New Manchester Manufacturing Company mill. The park doesn’t allow swimming in the reservoir, but many people enjoy wading, swimming and relaxing in the streams and pools near the mill.

Wildcat Creek

When you need an extended getaway, the Wildcat Creek campground is the place to go in the Atlanta area. Sixteen tenting sites are tucked away 28 miles from the nearest town, and you’re allowed to book a spot for up to 21 consecutive days. There’s plenty to do during your stay, including picnicking, grilling and fishing. You also get easy access to Wildcat Creek and all of its stunning waterfalls. Visit for a few days to cool down, or make this campground one of your summer destinations for a truly relaxing experience.

Residents of and visitors to the Atlanta area can enjoy these swimming holes throughout the summer. Cooling off in natural waters sequestered from the bustle of the city offers you and your family a rare break from a hectic seasonal schedule.
